Being a coach

One of the scariest things about being a coach is when athletes leave to go compete in their seasons.

You have spent months and weeks with an athlete in a gym, sweating and yelling and grinding away.  Some days you get mad at each other from the pushing and the closeness, and some days you could spend hours in the gym working together with not a thought for time.

I have been coaching for nearly a decade now and it never changes.  An athlete leaves and I get goosebumps.

I am scared for them like they were family going off to a new city to start a new life.

I am scared for their hopes and dreams, because their hopes and dreams have become mine.  Their life goals have been told to me, and expectations have elevated for both of us as monuments of success pour out of their accomplishment in the gym.

Now they leave.

Though my guidance doesn’t end.

My connection with them doesn’t sever.

I am proud to be a Strength and Conditioning coach, proud to be a trainer, proud to be a fitness professional.

I am proud of my athletes.  Proud of their work.

Proud of their character.

Being a coach brings me more fulfillment than I can explain.

Pieces of me everywhere achieving. and daring great things.

I love my work.
